FEMA APPROVES $479,157 GRANT FOR WEST POINT
WATER SUPPLY DROUGHT PROJECT
October 25, 2024
The Calaveras County Water District (CCWD) has been awarded $479,157 in federal funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), with a required 10% matching contribution from the District. This grant will fund Phase 1 of the West Point Water Supply Drought Project, a critical initiative aimed at enhancing the community's water storage capacity and bolstering resilience during droughts.

Phase 1 of the project will focus on detailed planning and engineering work to upgrade the West Point Bummerville Reservoir, the only water storage facility for the West Point Water System. Once completed, the improvements will raise and expand the reservoir, increasing its capacity from 50 acre-feet (AF) to approximately 150 AF.
Community Benefits:
This funding will allow CCWD to address long-standing water supply challenges for the West Point area, benefiting approximately 600 residential and commercial customers. The expansion of the reservoir will significantly improve water storage during drought periods, reducing CCWD’s dependence on external water sources. This will provide a more reliable and sustainable water supply for the community, ensuring better service to households and businesses, especially in times of water scarcity.
CCWD expects Phase 1 of the project to be completed by November 2025.
