Update 8 a.m. Friday August 31: The boil water notice is expected to remain in effect through the middle of next week. Only 150 customers are impacted by this notice, and each of them received a hand-delivered notice on Thursday afternoon. The majority of residents in Big Trees Village are not affected and can continue using water normally.

Original post: The Calaveras County Water District is issuing boil water notices to about 150 customers in the Big Trees Village area Thursday afternoon, due to wildlife intrusion into one of CCWD’s redwood water storage tanks. Notices will be hand-delivered or posted on the front doors of all impacted customers.

Customers who will be impacted include:

• All of Meko Drive
• All of Midoo Way
• All of Blackfoot Circle
• All of Miwuk Lane
• Shoshone Drive between 1830 and 2027

Customers who live on the highlighted streets will be impacted by the boil water notice.

The District is issuing these notices out of an abundance of caution to ensure the water is absolutely safe to drink. The redwood tank will be cleaned by professional divers, flushed and dosed with additional chlorine. Customers may experience water pressure fluctuations over the next few days. The water in the tank will be tested by a laboratory on consecutive days, and if the tests come back clear, the boil water notice will be lifted. The District hopes to lift the boil water notice by Sunday or Monday. Updates will be posted as they become available.

District crews discovered this issue during a routine tank inspection. This redwood tank is one of the oldest in the District and is constructed of antiquated building materials that have reached the end of their useful life. Over the past several years, the District has been seeking grant funding to replace the remaining redwood tanks in its system. In 2017, the District used a combination of California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) grant funding and ratepayer dollars to replace three redwood tanks in Big Trees Village area with new, steel tanks. Additional grant applications were submitted in the fall of 2017 and spring 2018 seeking Cal OES funds to replace this tank serving a portion of Big Trees Village and four other redwood tanks in the Dorrington, Arnold and Forest Meadows areas. The District is hopeful these grant applications will be successful, so the old tanks can be taken offline and replaced with state-of-the-art, glass-fused steel tanks.
